Abstract

The patterns of sucrose accumulation and changes in sucrose synthase (SS), sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and invertase activities during development of sweet and less-sweet muskmelon fruits were investigated. Fresh weight of less-sweet muskmelon was heavier than that of sweet muskmelon. Sucrose in sweet muskmelon fruit began to accumulate 20 days after anthesis until 50 days after anthesis, followed by a slight decrease. On the other hand, sucrose in less-sweet muskmelon fruit began to accumulate 20 days after anthesis up to 60 days after anthesis. Sweet muskmelon fruits were characterized by high sucrose content (9%) compared to less-sweet muskmelon (6%) at their maturity. Acid and neutral invertase activities were higher in the immature fruit and rapidly declined with maturation. Acid and neutral invertase activities showed similar patterns in both strains. SS and SPS activities began to increase 20 days after anthesis until 50 days after anthesis and then remained with little change. There were differences in SS and SPS activities between sweet and less-sweet muskmelon. A correlation coefficient between acid invertase and sucrose content was -0.89, whereas a correlation coefficient between SPS and sucrose content was 0.78.
